소개

TESOL(Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages)은 영어를 외국어로 배우는 학생들을 위한 효과적인 교수방법을 연구, 개발하여 영어전문가를 양성하는 학과입니다.

본 학과는 국내 영어교육 환경에 맞는 교육방법을 개발하고 외국어로서의 영어교육에 관한 전문인력을 양성하여, 한국의 영어교육 발전에 기여함을 목표로 하고 있습니다.

교육과정은 크게 교육방법론과 응용, 그리고 영어능력을 동시에 개발하는 과정으로 구성되어 있으며, 이론과 실제를 병행하여 멀티미디어를 이용한 영어교육방법 개발 등 교육의 효율성을 극대화하고 학생들의 학습동기를 극대화하는 교육자 양성에 중점을 두고 있습니다. 졸업시 문학석사(TESOL)학위가 수여됩니다.

Specific Requirements of Field of Specialization

Methodology of Teaching Language(언어교수방법론)

This course is designed provide a foundation for English language teaching. Theories of first and second language acquisition and their implications for English language classroom teaching will be discussed.

Child English Education and Bilingualism(어린이영어교육과이중언어)

Issues and problems in child English education in Korea will be discussed. Relevant theories and empirical studies will be introduced and the role of teacher, and the kind of input desirable for child learners will be discussed.

Materials Use and Development Ⅰ(교구사용과개발1)

Participants will develop knowledge and confidence in using materials for teaching English as a foreign language at the elementary and secondary levels. They will learn techniques for evaluating existing texts and materials and ways of using them effectively and in a more communicative way.

Materials Use and Development Ⅱ(교구사용과개발2)

The course will provide practice in selecting materials, adapting them to the needs and interests of the target audience, and using them in an interactive, communicative way. The course will also provide practice in developing new classroom materials from a variety of sources.

Classroom Interaction(교실담화분석)

Various kinds of interaction that occur in the classroom, such as the one between teacher and the whole class, teacher and the one student in the class, learner-learner interaction, or group interaction will be examined in their interactional patterns and the degree of activeness. Also, the acquisitional effects f these various interaction types will be discussed.

Phonetics for language Education(언어교육음성학)

The course will begin with articulatory and acoustic phonetics, the study of which will provide students with an introduction to experimental phonetics. Next, it will survey sounds of the world’s languages and then address issues in speech perception and acquisition. The course will help students understand universal aspects of speech, language, and sound systems so that teachers/learners of second languages may bridge language differences in a coherent manner.

Research Methodology for English as a Second Language(언어교육연구방법론)

Research methodology is introduced for phenomena and processes of the acquisition of English as a second language. Research planning, conducting and data analysis will be discussed and the class will evaluate studies in the literature from the perspective of research methodology.

English for English Teachers(영어교사를 위한 영어)

The goal of this course is to help students improve their abilities to manage classroom activities, attract and maintain students’ attention through clear instruction and direction. English language factor for those abilities will be provided in this course.

Studies in English Grammar(영문법연구)

This course takes a linguistic approach to the rules of sentence grammar. Course objectives are to provide foundation that will help students describe structural patterns and explain how rules interact in the formation of sentences.

Instruction for language skills(언어기능별지도방법)

Students will understand the processes of four language skills, reading and writing, listening and speaking, and how to apply them to teaching four language skills. Overall theoretical framework will be connected to the actual classroom teaching. Depending on the instructor’s course design, one or two of the four skills may be concentrated on.

Studies in English EducationⅠ(영어교육연구1)

Linguistics and other fields of studies that are related to English education will be introcuded with new possibilities for application to English education.

Practicum: Practical application of Teaching Principles(교수법실습)

Students will apply the principles of effective English teaching in both controlled and free teaching situations. Peer teaching will allow the students to practice teaching using their classmates as students. Feedback sessions and group discussions will help each student discover areas in which they are strong and areas in which they need to improve.

English Phonology(영어음운론)

Students will learn some tools of phonological analysis and use them to explore the morphological and phonological structure of English.

Contrastive Analysis(언어대조분석)

This course stresses the implicational value of contrastive analysis, its role as a source for experimental studies into the predictability of learner difficulty, its major theoretical contribution to current studies into interlanguage, its need to be combined with Error Analysis as a practical classroom research tool for teachers anxious to adjust their teaching to the state of knowledge of their learners.

Academic Writing(논문작성법)

In-depth writing exercises will satisfy students need for a more professional command of English while at the same time calling on their critical thinking skills n the field of English education. Students will examine the structure and organization of several academic papers and will practice writing a short research paper.

Meaning and Usage in English(영어의의미와용법)

The system of meaning in English lexicon and sentences will be discussed. The meaning of each unit and the intended meaning of the speaker will be compare and the factors and rules that bridge the gap will be discussed from cognitive and sociocultural perspectives.

Forms and Their Use in English(영어의형태와사용)

This course examines details of the use of grammatical features in different varieties and registers of English. The course will provide and innovative, practical perspective on English grammar by focusing on analyses of systematic differences between spoken and written grammar and explanations of how, when and why different structures are used in actual discourse and large corpora.

Assessment in English Education(영어평가방법론)

The role of assessment in the whole English education is discussed. On the other hand, the two most important factors of language assessment, relilability and validity, will be introduced to the students. In more detail, the kinds of assessment, the assessment tuned to the level of students will be discussed in comparison.

Sociolinguistics(사회언어학)

This course offers the student a perspective on language and society. Topics to be covered include language variation, linguistic varieties, gender and registers. Students will take a midterm and final exam, keep a bi-weekly journal. Attendance and participation are required for successful completion of the course.

Psycholinguistics(심리언어학)

This course is an introduction to the linguistic and psychological issues involved in the study of how children acquire a first language. Among the topics to be considered are Chomskyian discussion of the problem of language acquisition, the biological basis of language acquisition, infant speech perception, the relationship between language acquisition and the linguistic input to the child, research methods in language acquisition, the critical period hypothesis, and the acquisition of Sign Language.

Communication and Culture(언어사용과문화)

This course deals with the role of culture in communication between native and non-native speakers. In particular, the use of language and culture in second/foreign language acquisition will be investigated from the pragmatic aspects.

Multimedia and English Language Instruction(멀티미디어영어교수법)

Both the practical and theoretical aspects of using computers in second language learning will be explored. This course is intended to give participants a broad general view of computer-enhanced language teaching and learning. It will involve participants in exploring a working theory of language learning environments, using and discussing existing and potential applications of computer technology in the language classroom, and creating projects to use and test knowledge gained through reading, discussion, and hands-on experience.

Studies in English Education II(영어교육연구2)

Recent issues in second language acquisition will be introduced to the students. Based on the classical theories of second language acquisition, the new issues will be evaluated and the research interest of individual students will be discussed.
